In the Cowichan Valley
To our west, over logging roads, is Nitinat Lake which is famous for windsurfing; Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park; and Bamfield with access to the north west end of the West Coast Trail. You can also reach Port Alberni on the way to Tofino and the Pacific Rim Park.
You can follow the Circle Route South to Port Renfrew and then along the Juan de Fuca coast to Sooke and Victoria. We are pleased to report that all of this road is blacktop. It provides an interesting scenic journey to Victoria.
A number of wineries and Meridale Cidery are located between Duncan and Mill Bay. We have enjoyed lunches and wine tasting at many places. Tours can be arranged.
The Quw'utsun' Centre with riverside cafe, historical displays and a gift shop, is located in  Duncan.

In August 2008 the Cowichan Valley successfully hosted the North American Indigenous Games.
You can enjoy hiking on the hills surrounding Duncan. Just North of Duncan you find the Forest Discovery Centre and the Somenos Marsh. Turning right onto Herd Road (Opp Highway 18) leads you to the NW Raptor centre where they do daily raptor demonstrations.
Further north is Chemainus, "the town that could."    Chemainus is famous for murals depicting local history, and for the Chemainus theatre which produces many quality shows each year.
In the valley there are a number of small towns such as Ladysmith, Maple Bay and Genoa, Crofton with mills, Cowichan Bay a real tourist centre which includes our favourite Rock Cod Cafe, Mill Bay and Cobble Hill. Each has unique features and places to visit.
